1) Newfoundland and Labrador’s Gushue and Strong Looking To Break Loose at TYLENOL® Players’ Championship in St. John’s

After their recent struggles in the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling events, local Newfoundland and Labrador skips Brad Gushue (St. John’s, Nfld.) and Heather Strong (St. John’s, Nfld.) will each look to breakthrough on home ice during the season’s final major event, the 2008 TYLENOL® Players’ Championship, at the Mile One Centre in St. John’s.

Regarded as Canada’s premier “best on best” curling series, the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling events are arguably the toughest tournaments to win each season as all eight premier events feature Canada’s deepest and strongest curling fields.

The last time the TYLENOL® Players’ Championship was played in St. John’s, Gushue’s team advanced all the way to the 2005 finals before falling to Kevin Martin’s (Edmonton, Alta.) squad.

Since then, Gushue’s team has struggled in the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling tournaments, failing to advance past the quarterfinals in any event during the past three seasons.

While Gushue is a veteran of the “best on best” series, Strong is a relative newcomer, having only competed in a pair Capital One Grand Slam of Curling events over the past two seasons.

Over the past two years, Strong has a record of 7-6 in Capital One Grand Slam of Curling events, but her team is still looking to qualify for its first quarterfinals appearance.

2) Middaugh and Kleibrink a Model of Consistency in Capital One Grand Slam Events

As Canada’s premier “best on best” curling series, the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling events are arguably the toughest tournaments to win each season as all eight premier events feature Canada’s deepest and strongest curling fields.

Through the first seven Capital One Grand Slam of Curling events this season, Wayne Middaugh (Midland, Ont.) and Shannon Kleibrink (Calgary, Alta.) have been two of the series’ most consistent performers.

In the men’s events, Middaugh – a four-time TYLENOL® Players’ Champion – is the only skip to successfully reach the semi-finals of the first three 2007-08 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling events.

Overall, Middaugh is an impressive 15-6 during the 2007-08 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series and has posted an identical 5-2 mark at all three events.

One the women’s end, Kleibrink is the only skip to successfully qualify for the playoffs of the first four 2007-08 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling women’s events.

Apart from falling in the quarterfinals of the Wayden Transportation Ladies Classic, Kleibrink has advanced to the semi-finals of each event and earlier this season, her team captured the Casinos of Winnipeg tournament.

The 2007-08 men’s Grand Slam of Curling series features the BDO Classic Canadian Open, The National, the Masters of Curling and the TYLENOL® Players’ Championship.

The 2007-08 women’s Grand Slam of Curling series includes the Trail Appliances Autumn Gold, the Casinos of Winnipeg, the Wayden Transportation, the Sobeys Slam and the TYLENOL® Players’ Championship.

1) The Couples That Curl Together, Stay Together

As one of the few Canadian curling tournaments that feature both a men’s and a women’s draw, the 2008 TYLENOL® Players’ Championship will afford some of Canada’s most notable curling couples the rare opportunity to compete, and support each other, at the same event.

The 2008 TYLENOL® Players’ Championship is expected to feature a total of four married couples. This list includes Wayne and Sherry Middaugh (Midland, Ont.), Dave and Heather Nedohin (Edmonton, Alta.), Marcel and Raylene Rocque (Edmonton, Alta.) and Pat and Cindy Simmons (Moose Jaw, Sask.)

With many of Canada’s top curling rinks on the road for 10-12 weekends each season, juggling a career, family, and a marriage can be a challenging proposition at times.

For the group of married couples who will be competing for their respective teams at the TYLENOL® Players’ Championship, they’ll have the rare opportunity of being able to discuss items such as game strategy and team preparation with their spouse during the tournament.

2) Jennifer Jones Feels Right at Home in St. John’s

Set to return to St. John’s for the first time since executing a brilliant in-off for four on her last shot to win the 2005 Tournament of Hearts title, Jennifer Jones (Winnipeg, Man.) will look to draw on that positive experience as she aims to skip her team to an unprecedented third consecutive TYLENOL® Players’ Championship title.

Should Jones’ team capture the season’s final Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event title in St. John’s, she would become the first skip (man or woman) to win the TYLENOL® Players’ Championship in three consecutive seasons.

The TYLENOL® Players’ Championship has been held annually as a joint men’s and women’s event since 2006. Jones’ team previously won the inaugural two editions of the women’s TYLENOL® Players’ Championship when the tournaments were held in Calgary.

The 2005 Tournament of Hearts was held at the Mile One Centre, the same venue as the 2008 TYLENOL® Players’ Championship.

During the 10th end of the 2005 Tournament of Hearts, Jones made a hit and roll off an Ontario stone outside the rings to take out Jenn Hanna's (Ottawa, Ont.) shot rock at the button and score four points.

CBC Sports curling analyst Mike Harris called it the best game-winning shot he'd ever seen.

Capital One Grand Slam of Curling Announces Curling’s First Million Dollar Contest

One lucky curling fan will win the chance to hit the button for a million dollars, live on CBC Television

TORONTO, March 19, 2008 – The Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series announced today the creation of the Capital One Million Dollar Button, a contest where one lucky fan will win the chance to throw a rock to the button for $1 million (CDN), live on CBC Television, during the 2009 Masters of Curling in January.

The Capital One Million Dollar Button is the first curling-based contest with a grand prize of $1 million available to be won.

In order to win the Capital One Million Dollar Button’s grand prize of a one-time payment of $1 million, the contest’s finalist must successfully deliver a rock from the hack and place the stone within the button on a regulation curling sheet. The contest’s finalist will have just one opportunity to execute the shot.

“We’re committed to continually developing and promoting the sport of curling, and what better way to get the fans involved than to get them on the ice,” said Ian Cunningham, Chief Operating Officer, Capital One Canada. “We’re thrilled to provide this new level of excitement to the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series and we hope to see a million dollar throw in January.”

"We have all watched curling on TV and said to ourselves, 'I could make that shot if only I had the chance.' This is a great way to engage curling enthusiasts and new fans," added Scott Moore, Executive Director, CBC Sports. "Having this contest during the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series on CBC promises to be fun and exciting, both for participants and viewers alike."

During the men’s 2008-09 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series, lucky fans at the Classic Canadian Open and The National will be randomly selected to throw a stone. During each event, the fan who is closest to the button will win the right to compete in the semi-finals of the Capital One Million Dollar Button during the 2009 Masters of Curling. In addition, two fans will be randomly selected through a national draw to compete for the $1 million prize.

The four semi-finalists will subsequently compete in a playoff against each other. The qualifier who throws the stone closest to the button will earn the right to compete for $1 million in the finals of the Capital One Million Dollar Button.

A complete overview of the rules and regulations for the Capital One Million Dollar Button will be announced at a later date.

As the official television broadcaster of the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling, CBC Sports will air coverage of the playoffs and finals of the first three 2008-09 men’s Capital One Grand Slam of Curling events. CBC Sports will also broadcast the men’s and women’s finals of the 2009 Players’ Championship, the eighth and final leg of the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series.

Held annually since 2001-02, the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling is a series of eight premier men’s and women’s events that boast Canada’s deepest and strongest curling fields. The men’s 2008-09 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series will feature four events including the Classic Canadian Open, The National, the Masters of Curling and the Players’ Championship. The official dates and locations for the four men’s 2008-09 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series events will be announced in the coming months.
