NEWS RELEASE

Team Martin Goes Back-To-Back At The National

Kevin Martin defeats Kevin Koe 5-2 to win fifth consecutive Capital One Grand Slam of Curling title

PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S., December 23, 2007 – Kevin Martin captured his second consecutive title at The National today, defeating fellow Edmontonian Kevin Koe 5-2 during the finals of the men’s second Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event, taking place at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre in Port Hawkesbury, N.S.

The finals were a re-match of last season’s championship game, which Martin won by a score of 6-5.

With the victory, Martin captured his fifth consecutive Capital One Grand Slam of Curling title.  In 2006-07, Martin’s squad fell in the semi-finals of the season’s first Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event, the Masters of Curling, before winning the BDO Classic Canadian Open, The National and the TYLENOL® Players’ Championship.

Martin began this season’s Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series by capturing the year’s first event, the 2007 BDO Classic Canadian Open, in Quebec City.

“It’s hard to believe we’ve won five in a row,” said Martin.  “These events are hard to win.  They feature the best curlers in the world.  Koe’s team was on fire this week and if we didn’t bring our A game today, we would have lost.”

The win extended Martin’s all-time Capital One Grand Slam of Curling victories record to 12.

Koe was aiming to win his first Capital One Grand Slam of Curling title.  The loss also snapped the squad’s 14-game winning streak.

“It was a tough game,” said Koe.  “We felt we played well. Kevin’s team threw well and unfortunately it came down to one end.”

In the first end, Martin jumped on his opponent early by completing an open draw for two.

After both teams traded points in the second and third ends, Martin took control of the match in the fourth after executing a timely hit and roll behind cover to eventually steal two points en route to an insurmountable 5-1 advantage.

Both teams finished the tournament with a record of 7-1.

As tournament champions, Martin’s team won $25,000 and earned 36.000 Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) points. By finishing second, Team Koe took home $18,000 along with 27.000 CTRS points.

The National featured a total purse of $100,000.

Held annually since 2001-02, the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling is a series of eight premier men’s and women’s events that boast Canada’s deepest and strongest curling fields.

The 2007-08 men’s Grand Slam of Curling series continues next month in January when Saskatoon hosts the series’ third leg, the Masters of Curling, from January 23 to 27. The Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series wraps up in St. John’s when the city plays host to the TYLENOL® Players’ Championship from April 16-20.

Kevin Martin Looks to Go Back-To-Back At The National

Martin to face-off against Kevin Koe in a bid for five consecutive Capital One Grand Slam of Curling titles

PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S., December 22, 2007 – Defending champion Kevin Martin (Edmonton, Alta.) will shoot for his second consecutive title at The National tomorrow when he takes on provincial rival Kevin Koe (Edmonton, Alta.) during the finals of the men’s second Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event, taking place at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre in Port Hawkesbury, N.S.

The championship game is a re-match of last season’s final at The National when Martin defeated Koe 6-5.

The finals of The National is set for Sunday, December 23 at 11:00 a.m. AST.  The game will be shown on tape delay on CBC Television beginning at 2:00 p.m. AST.

Martin secured a berth in championship game with a 6-5 victory over Jeff Stoughton (Winnipeg, Man.) while Koe’s team remained perfect at The National after defeating Wayne Middaugh (Toronto, Ont.) 6-5 for their 14th consecutive victory.

With the victory, Martin will aim to win his fifth consecutive Capital One Grand Slam of Curling title.  In 2006-07, Martin’s squad fell in the semi-finals of the season’s first Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event, the Masters of Curling, before winning the BDO Classic Canadian Open, The National and the TYLENOL® Players’ Championship.

Martin began this season’s Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series by capturing the 2007 BDO Classic Canadian Open in Quebec City.

Tied with Stoughton at 3-3 in the sixth, Martin threw a hit into a cluster of rocks around the four foot area and came away with two points to take control of the game.  After Stoughton scored a pair in the seventh to tie the game at 5-5, Martin scored the winning point on a hit in the eighth for his sixth straight victory.

In the second semi-final, Koe’s team broke open the game in the third end when fourth Blake MacDonald scored three points on a split to give his team a 4-2 advantage.  After Middaugh stole a point in the seventh end to tie the game at 5-5, the former champion of The National over-curled his final shot, giving Koe the one-point win.

During tomorrow’s final, Koe will aim to capture his first Capital One Grand Slam of Curling title while Martin is Canada’s all-time leader in Grand Slam victories with 11.

The National features a total purse of $100,000.  The tournament’s winning team will receive $25,000 along with 36.000 Canadian Team Ranking System points.

In this morning’s quarterfinal draws, the match-up featuring Martin and Greg McAulay (Richmond, B.C.) produced the most exciting game of the tournament to date. With Martin trailing 5-3 after seven ends, Canada’s top ranked skip made a brilliant double take out on his final shot to score three points for a dramatic 6-5 victory.

Stoughton advanced to the semi-final after executing a run back to score five points in the seventh en route to a 9-4 win over Pat Simmons (Davidson, Sask.).

The other quarterfinal matches saw Koe defeat Kerry Burtnyk (Winnipeg, Man.) 6-4 and Middaugh edge past Peter Corner (Brampton, Ont.) 6-5 in an extra end.  Tied 5-5 after regulation, Corner failed to convert a triple takeout attempt, allowing Middaugh to score a point for the victory.

Koe Remains Perfect As Quarterfinal Field For The National Takes Shape

Former champions Kevin Martin and Wayne Middaugh join Jeff Stoughton and Pat Simmons in the hunt for the season’s second Capital One Grand Slam of Curling title

PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S., December 21, 2007 – Kevin Koe (Edmonton, Alta.) stands alone atop of the leaderboard with a perfect 4-0 record through the first eight draws of The National, the second leg of the men’s Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series, taking place at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre in Port Hawkesbury, N.S.

After capturing the championship at the John Shea Insurance Canada Cup Qualifier last weekend in Ottawa, Koe’s team ran its current win streak to 11 consecutive games after sneaking by Pete Fenson (Bemidji, Minn., USA) 5-4 in an extra end and ousting Reid Carruthers (Winnipeg, Man.) 5-1 in just three ends during the second day of the tournament.

With the final round robin draw scheduled for later this evening, Koe’s rink is guaranteed a spot in The National’s quarterfinal round.  In addition to Koe, Pat Simmons (Davidson, Sask.) and Wayne Middaugh (Toronto, Ont.) have also secured berths in the quarterfinals after concluding the preliminary round with identical 4-1 marks.

Heading into the final draw, defending champion Kevin Martin (Edmonton, Alta.), Peter Corner (Brampton, Ont.), Terry Burtynk (Winnipeg, Man.) and Jeff Stoughton (Winnipeg, Man.) are each in a favourable position to qualify for the playoffs as all four teams have a record of 3-1.

Greg McAulay (Richmond, B.C.) remains in the hunt for a playoff berth with a final round robin record of 3-2 while reigning Olympic champion Brad Gushue (St. John’s, Nfld.) and Tom Brewster (Aberdeen, Scotland) both need victories in their final round robin game this evening to keep their hopes of qualifying for the quarterfinals alive.

After dropping his opening two games yesterday, Gushue battled back into contention with a pair of wins over former teammate Russ Howard (Moncton, N.B.) and Stoughton.

Trailing 3-0 to Stoughton, and in danger of being eliminated from the tournament with a loss, Gushue’s team rallied for five straight points over the final five ends. With the score tied 3-3 in the seventh, Gushue’s squad stole a point in both the seventh and eighth ends to secure the victory.

Koe, Stoughton, McAulay and Brewster Jump Ahead At The National

Defending champion Kevin Martin rebounds from opening round loss at season’s second Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event

PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S., December 20, 2007 – Kevin Koe (Edmonton, Alta.), Jeff Stoughton (Winnipeg, Man.), Greg McAulay (Richmond, B.C.) and Tom Brewster (Aberdeen, Scotland) each finished with a perfect 2-0 record today to remain the lone unbeaten teams through the first four draws of The National, the second leg of the men’s Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series, taking place at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre in Port Hawkesbury, N.S.

After capturing the championship at the John Shea Insurance Canada Cup Qualifier last weekend in Ottawa, Koe’s rink ran its current win streak to nine consecutive games with a 4-3 victory over Wayne Middaugh (Toronto, Ont.) and a 6-3 decision over Jamie King (Edmonton, Alta.).

Stoughton needed a point on his final rock to squeeze past Peter Corner (Brampton, Ont.) 5-4 for his second victory of the tournament.  Earlier in the day, Stoughton’s rink defeated Russ Howard’s squad (Moncton, N.B.) 7-5.

McAulay remained perfect at The National by posting convincing victories over Joel Jordison (Moose Jaw, Sask.) and Mark Kehoe (Falmouth, N.S.) by scores of 8-3 and 7-2 respectively.

Brewster earned his two wins against a pair of members from Canada’s 2006 Olympic gold medal winning team.  The lone rink from Europe competing at The National, the Scotland-based team turned aside Brad Gushue’s (St. John’s, Nfld.) squad 6-4 before scoring a 9-3 victory over Howard’s team.

Carruthers, competing in his first Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event, wasted little time in picking up his initial two victories, defeating King 8-6 and ousting Pete Fenson’s (Bemidji, Minn., USA) side by a score of 6-3.  Carruthers’ efforts to move to 3-0 were stalled later this evening as his squad fell to Kerry Burtnyk’s (Winnipeg, Man.) rink by a score of 6-2 to finish the day at 2-1.

Joining Carruthers with a record of 2-1 are Burtnyk and Middaugh.

Defending champion Kevin Martin (Edmonton, Alta.) leads a large group of rinks at 1-1. In addition to Martin, Shawn Adams (Halifax, N.S.), Corner, Kehoe, Pat Simmons (Davidson, Sask.) and Brent MacDonald (Edmonton, Alta.) each split their opening two games this evening.

Aiming for his fifth consecutive Capital One Grand Slam of Curling title, Martin’s rink rebounded from a 6-5 extra end defeat to Kehoe to upend Simmons’ squad 6-4.

With Martin and Kehoe knotted at 5-5 after regulation, Martin miscued on his first stone leaving Kehoe an out.  After capitalizing on the opportunity, Martin was left with a difficult tap on his final shot.  Team Martin’s subsequent miss on their final stone allowed Kehoe’s rink to pull off the biggest upset of the tournament to date.

Olympic gold medallists Gushue and Howard each struggled on the opening day of the tournament, finishing with identical 0-2 records.

King and Jordison are also at 0-2 while Fenson ended the night with a record of 0-3.

Friday’s draw times are set for 8:30 a.m. 11:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. respectively.

The top eight teams following the conclusion of round robin play qualify for the tournament’s quarterfinals on Saturday.

The National features a total of 18 rinks vying for a total purse of $100,000.  The tournament’s winning team will receive $25,000.

NEWS RELEASE

Koe, McAulay and Carruthers Jump Ahead At The National

Defending champion Kevin Martin rebounds from opening round loss at season’s second Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event

PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S., December 20, 2007 – Kevin Koe (Edmonton, Alta.), Greg McAulay (Richmond, B.C.) and Reid Carruthers (Winnipeg, Man.) sit atop of standings with records of 2-0 following the first three draws of The National, the second leg of the men’s Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series, taking place at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre in Port Hawkesbury, N.S.

McAulay remained perfect at The National by posting convincing victories over Joel Jordison (Moose Jaw, Sask.) and Mark Kehoe (Falmouth, N.S.) by scores of 8-3 and 7-2 respectively.

Carruthers, competing in his first Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event, wasted little time in picking up his initial two victories, defeating King 8-6 before ousting Pete Fenson’s (Bemidji, Minn., USA) side by a score of 6-3.

Defending champion Kevin Martin (Edmonton, Alta.) leads a large group of rinks at 1-1. In addition to Martin, Shawn Adams (Halifax, N.S.), Kerry Burtnyk (Winnipeg, Man.), Kehoe, Middaugh and Pat Simmons (Davidson, Sask.) all sit one game back of the three co-leaders through the opening three draws.

After Kehoe capitalized on his opportunity, Martin was left with a difficult tap on his final shot.  Team Martin’s subsequent miss on their final stone allowed Kehoe’s rink to pull off the biggest upset of this season’s Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series.
