1) Jennifer Jones in Position to Capture Rare Triple Crown
Since the
inception of the TYLENOL® Players’ Championship in 1993,
only one team has successfully captured the Brier/Tournament
of Hearts, World Championship and TYLENOL® Players’
Championship in the same season.
That honour belongs to Olympic gold medallist
Russ Howard (Moncton,
N.B.) who accomplished the feat in 1993.
With her recent gold medal victory at the 2008 World Women’s Curling Championship, Jennifer Jones (Winnipeg, Man.) has put herself in position to become just the second skip to complete the rare triple crown should she successfully defend her TYLENOL® Players’ Championship in St. John’s.
The TYLENOL® Players’ Championship has been held annually as a joint men’s and women’s event since 2006. Jones’ team has won the first two editions of the women’s TYLENOL® Players’ Championship.
Last year, Kelly Scott (Kelowna, B.C.) nearly accomplished the feat after winning the Tournament of Hearts and the World Championship before falling to Jones in the finals of the 2007 TYLENOL® Players’ Championship.
2) From the broadcast booth to the rink: CBC's Mike Harris to Skip for Peter Corner's Team at the TYLENOL® Players' Championship
During the first three legs of the men's 2007-08 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series, 1998 Olympic silver medallist Mike Harris (Toronto, Ont.) had the best seat in the house as a member of CBC's Championship Curling broadcast team.
During the BDO Classic Canadian Open, The National and the Masters of Curling, Harris worked alongside CBC host Bruce Rainne and fellow CBC curling analyst Joan McCusker to provide Canadian curling fans expert opinion and commentary on Canada's top men's teams.
However, for the 2008 TYLENOL® Players' Championship in St. John's, Harris will begin the tournament on the ice, rather than in the broadcast booth, after accepting an invitation to serve as a substitute on Peter Corner's (Brampton, Ont.) team.
With Corner electing to retire from his team, Harris will serve as the squad's skip for the TYLENOL® Players' Championship in St. John's.
Should Harris' team qualify for the finals of the TYLENOL® Players' Championship, CBC will be excusing Harris from his broadcasting duties that day.
