World
Mixed Doubles
Curling
Championship 2010
Apr 16 - Apr 24 2010
Chelyabinsk, Russia
Sean and Bridget Becker have progressed to the final
of the mixed doubles at the world curling championships
in Chelyabinsk, Russia, after beating Spain 10-3 in the
semifinals today (NZtime).
The siblings, from the Ranfurly Curling Club in
central Otago, yesterday became the first New Zealanders
to qualify for post-section play at a world championship
and broke more new ground with a 10-4 win over Italy in
this morning's quarterfinals.
Their opponent in the final will be hosts Russia who
beat China 16-4 in the other semifinal.
-----------
For Canada’s mixed doubles curling reps, it’s not how
they envisioned their trip overseas.
It started out OK for 2004 Brier champion Mark Dacey
and his wife Heather Smith-Dacey, skip of the 1991
Canadian junior women’s champions.
After enjoying a couple days vacation in London, they
were set to fly to Russia for the World Mixed Doubles
Curling Championship last Thursday.
But that’s when their plans were thrown off course by
an erupting volcano in Iceland, the upshot being the
Daceys couldn’t find a way to Chelyabinsk, Russia, and
had to withdraw from the championship that started last
Sunday.

Championships 2010
Apr 16 - Apr 24 2010

update:
Canada has a shot at two gold medals at the world
senior curling championships in Russia.
Colleen Pinkney of Truro, N.S.,
advanced to the final with an 8-2 win over Sweden today.
Ottawa skip Bruce Delaney had a
tougher road to the final, needing a single in the
eighth to edge Australia 3-2.
The Canadian men will face the
Americans in Saturday's final.
The Canadian women will meet
Switzerland.
Both Canadian rinks have yet to lose
at the tournament.

But Canada had to settle for the split as Ottawa's
Bruce Delaney dropped a 4-3 decision to the United
States in the men's final.
The Americans captured the gold medal with steals of
one in each of the final two ends to hand the Canadians
their only loss of the event.
The Americans handed Canada its only loss of the
tournament and claimed just their second world senior
men's title. The first came in 2002.
