Brad Gushue and Stefanie Lawton Move Atop Capital One Cup Standings
After advancing to the finals of The National, Gushue leads the men’s standings with a total of 16 points. Masters of Curling champion Glenn Howard (Coldwater, Ont.) and The National champion Wayne Middaugh (Midland, Ont.) are tied for second with 13 points apiece. Reigning World Champion Kevin Martin (Edmonton, Alta.), Randy Ferbey (Edmonton, Alta.) and Jeff Stoughton (Winnipeg, Man.) sit in a tie for third place with 12 points.
Lawton moved to the top of the women’s standings with 29 points following a finals appearance at the Sobeys Slam. Lawton leads Cheryl Bernard (Calgary, Alta.) and Wayden Transportation Ladies Classic champion Jennifer Jones (Winnipeg, Man.) by six points heading into the season’s final Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event. Cathy King (Edmonton, Alta.) sits alone in third place with 19 points.
The Capital One Cup is a points-based competition that awards each curling team a point value based on their performance during each Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event. Following the conclusion of the curling season, a purse totalling $170,000 (CDN) will be awarded to the top three men’s and women’s teams which record the highest cumulative results during the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling events.
In 2008-09, men will receive Capital One Cup points based on their results in the Masters of Curling, The National, the BDO Classic Canadian Open and the Grey Power Players’ Championship. Women will receive Capital One Cup points at the Trail Appliance Curling Classic, the Casinos of Winnipeg, the Wayden Transportation Ladies Classic, the Sobeys Slam and the Grey Power Players’ Championship.
Following the conclusion of the season ending Players’ Championship, the top men’s and women’s teams in the Capital One Cup standings will each receive $50,000 (CDN). The second and third place men’s and women’s squads will each receive $25,000 (CDN) and $10,000 (CDN) respectively.

Through their performance in the Capital One Grand Slam of Curling events, rinks can earn a significant amount of points towards securing a berth at the 2009 Canadian Trials.

Glenn Howard and Cheryl Bernard Lead Capital One Cup Standings
Howard leads the men’s standings after earning 12 points for his victory at the Masters of Curling, the first leg of the men’s 2008-09 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series. Bernard maintained her overall lead in the women’s Capital One Cup standings after picking up seven points for reaching the semi-finals of the Wayden Transportation Ladies Classic, the third leg of the women’s 2008-09 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series. Through three events, Bernard has an overall point total of 21.
