The Manitoba Junior Curling Tour (MJCT) opened its season this weekend with the highly successful Stonewall Junior Classic.

Daniel Birchard (Pembina) and Michelle Montford (Assiniboine Memorial) both went undefeated to win their respective divisions in the first MJCT event of the season at the Stonewall Junior Classic.

A steal of three on the second end by Birchard was the key in defeating Stonewall's own Kennedy Bird 7-2.  Birchard was supported by Kelly Fordyce, Brody Moore, Andrew Peck and coach Bruce Birchard.

Earlier in the day, Birchard defeated Jared Kolomaya (Stonewall) and Bird advanced by getting past Jim Coleman (Pembina) 4-2.  Quarter-finalists were Joey Witherspoon (Brandon), Steen Sigurdson (Petersfield), Jesse McCullough (West Kildonan) and Dylan Gousseau (Deer Lodge).

In the junior women's final, Montford raced out to an 8-0 lead over West St. Paul's Kelsey Boettcher on the strength of two consecutive steals of three.  Boettcher scored a deuce in 4 before the handshakes came out, with the final score ending 8-2.  Montford's team includes Courtney Blanchard, Sara Jones, Sarah Norget and coach Eric Montford.

In the morning semi-finals, Montford defeated Kate Cameron (Victoria) 7-5 and Boettcher edged Sarah Lund (Victoria) 6-5.

Next week, the MJCT makes a stop in Dauphin for the junior men's Dauphin Clinic Pharmacy Junior Cashspiel.
