Kevin Martin’s (Edmonton, Alta.) bid for a sixth consecutive Capital One Grand Slam of Curling title came to an end in the quarterfinals today as Canada’s top-ranked skip fell 4-3 to Howard. Tied at 3-3 entering the final end, Martin came up a bit heavy on his final shot to the house, allowing Howard to steal the winning point.
After defeating Martin, Howard took a 4-3 lead over Middaugh into the final end. Holding the hammer, Howard earned a single point to preserve the victory.
In the other semi-final, the turning point came in the third end as Burtnyk’s triple takeout attempt removed only one stone, allowing Koe an open draw into the house for three points and a 4-1 lead. The loss was Burtnyk’s first of the tournament after opening with six consecutive victories.
In this morning’s quarterfinal draws, Middaugh defeated Saskatchewan’s Pat Simmons (Davidson, Sask.) 5-4 to become the only player this season to advance to the semi-finals of the first three Capital One Grand Slam of Curling events. Tied at 4-4, Middaugh benefited from a Simmons miscue on his final shot, enabling him to earn a one-point victory without having to throw his last rock.
In other quarterfinal results, Koe scored four points in both the first and third ends to easily outdistance Randy Ferbey (Edmonton, Alta.) 8-1 while Burtnyk recorded his sixth consecutive tournament victory with a 9-3 win over Martin Ferland (Cap-de-la-Madeleine, Que.).

Grand Master: Howard Defends Masters of Curling Crown
Reigning World Champion captures fourth Capital One Grand Slam of Curling title
SASKATOON, January 27, 2008 – Reining World Champion Glenn Howard (Coldwater, Ont.) successfully defended his title at the Masters of Curling today, defeating Kevin Koe (Edmonton, Alta.) 7-3 in the finals of the third leg of the men’s Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series. Held at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon, the five-day event concluded with a total attendance of 22,893.
With the victory, Howard moves into third place on the all-time Capital One Grand Slam of Curling winners list with four career titles. Kevin Martin (Edmonton, Alta.) leads all skips in Capital One Grand Slam of Curling victories with 12 while Wayne Middaugh (Midland, Ont.) is second with seven. Jeff Stoughton (Winnipeg, Man.) sits in fourth place with three titles.
“It’s a game of inches,” said Howard. “It
could have either way. It’s not like we
outplayed them. It was just a matter of a
couple shots here or there.”
Koe’s defeat dropped his team to 0-4 in Capital One Grand Slam of Curling finals. Koe previously lost to Martin in the finals of the 2007 TYLENOL® Players’ Championship, and in the title game of The National in both 2007-08 and 2007-06.
Leading 2-1 after two ends, Howard broke open the game in the third frame after Koe’s fourth, Blake MacDonald, attempted a high-risk double takeout around a guard. MacDonald’s shot did not curl enough and his rock ultimately rolled out of the rings to give Howard’s team a steal of two points.
Up by two in the seventh, Howard clinched the game on his final shot after executing a difficult runback double to score two points.
“It was a tough game,” said Koe. “We made a
lot of good shots but we had one bad pick
that put us behind the eight ball. One miss
is usually enough against teams of this
calibre.”
Howard completed the Masters of Curling with a 7-1 record while Koe concluded the tournament at 6-2.
As tournament champions, Howard’s team won $24,500 and earned 36.000 Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS) points. By finishing second, Koe’s squad took home $17,000 along with 27.000 CTRS points.
The Masters of Curling featured a total purse of $100,000.
