Curling gets mental with new book

CALGARY -- The first book devoted entirely to the mental aspects of the sport of curling will be released as Canada’s best battle for Olympic glory in December.

Between the Sheets: Creating Curling Champions is the brainchild of Cheryl Bernard, the 2005 Ultima World Curling Tour champion and two-time Scott Tournament of Hearts skip representing Alberta. Bernard teamed with fellow Calgarian Guy Scholz, national best-selling author of Gold on Ice: The Story of the Sandra Schmirler Curling Team and feature writer for Sweep! magazine, who wrote the book, while Bernard served as consultant and research associate.

Between the Sheets is published by Hillsboro Press in Franklin, Tennessee and is slated for release during the week of the Tim Horton’s Canadian Curling Trials in Halifax in early December 2005.

Between the Sheets is written in an informal storytelling manner and is filled with anecdotes from nearly one hundred world-class athletes from around the world. Aimed at curlers who want to learn the secrets of championship curlers, the book also speaks to devoted curling fans who want to read about their favorite players and learn what makes them tick.

Widely endorsed by competitors such as five-time world champion Randy Ferbey, Olympic silver medallist Don Bartlett and Trials-bound Ontario skip Sherry Middaugh, Between the Sheets also offers much to non-curlers or casual fans. Richie Hall, Assistant Head Coach of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Claire Carver-Dias, Olympic bronze medallist in synchronized swimming, both reviewed the book and recommend it to athletes of any sport who seek the competitive edge.

The book retails for $24.95 and can be purchased through the Between the Sheets website at www.betweenthesheetscurling.com and in bookstores, curling pro shops, the Canadian Curling Association website www.curling.ca and the Asham Curling Supplies website www.asham.com. Most of the major curling clubs in Canada and the USA will be receiving posters and table toppers in early to mid-November for promotional purposes. In addition, $1.00 from every purchase will go towards Calgary’s Curl for a Cure event in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, and $1.00 from every book purchased through the CCA website will go to The Sandra Schmirler Foundation.
